My review of "Scratch 2.0 Beginner's Guide: Second Edition

“Scratch 2.0 Beginner’s Guide: Second Edition” was written by Michael Badger and provides several projects that engage the reader and encourage exploring the Scratch 2.0 game engine.  Scratch 2.0 is a game engine that is maintained by MIT and requires very little programming knowledge.  For this reason, Scratch 2.0 is great for children and adults just getting started with creating their own games.  The book’s projects are as simple as creating a greeting card and as complex as a unique version of the classic game “Breakout.”
I enjoyed trying the projects in the book.  Code is provided in download form from Packtpub’s webpage for the book.  I found the code a great reference for each project as it was a simple matter to compare your code to the code from the provided download.  The Scratch 2.0 engine is available online and in a desktop version.  I found myself using both versions, depending on the project.  The desktop version makes it very easy to try code that others have written; by providing an “open document” command.  If you use the online version of Scratch 2.0 you will need to upload the project; and that didn’t always work for me.
The projects that you create include a simple storybook,  a multimedia slideshow (which lets you use your own pictures), and a fortune-telling game. My favorite project is the “Breakout” clone. Each project lasts the length of a chapter, except for the “Breakout” clone which lasts two chapters. At the chapter’s end there is a short quiz, whose answers are found in Appendix B.  Appendix A provides information on using Scratch with a PicoBoard, and Raspberry Pi.
I recommend “Scratch 2.0 Beginner’s Guide: Second Edition” to anyone who is interested in trying Scratch 2.0.  By the end of the book you will have enough confidence to start a project of your own.  There is an extensive community supporting Scratch 2.0 and they will be happy to provide help with any problems that you might have.

Manga Studio 5 Beginner's Guide Review

Manga Studio 5 is a program distributed by Smith Micro that is available in 2 versions, Regular and EX.  (Apparently, Manga Studio was also available under the name of Clip Studio Paint Pro (Manga Studio) and Clip Studio Paint EX (Manga Studio EX).) Manga Studio 5 Beginner’s Guide was written by Michael Rhodes and he does an excellent job of explaining the ins and outs of Manga Studio.  The book was published by Packt Publishing which provides a webpage for the book on their site:

The book follows using the Manga Studio (Clip Studio Paint Pro) version, though it does contain one chapter about the extra capabilities available in the EX version.  Now that you are thoroughly confused let me say that I was able to use the book with the Smith Micro trial download which provides you with both versions of Manga Studio.  I also used Manga Studio 4 EX with this book, and while the interfaces are different which may lead to some menu-hunting for commands, you can still learn a lot from this book regarding that version of the software.

I am a big fan of the Manga style of comics; but I am also an awful artist.  I was hoping that this program might dig up some hidden talent.  Unfortunately, the answer is no.  Both the book and the program expect you to be able to draw.  The book does an excellent job of bringing artists up to speed on Manga Studio 5.  Manga Studio 5 is very customizable and this beginner’s guide explains how to create various unique brushes and page styles.

The book mentions a colored-pdf supplement that provides colored pictures of the books graphics. I was able to download this earlier; but it doesn’t seem to be available now, which is a shame since it really helped me with understanding the book.  The book also mentions that support files are available; but I was never able to find them.

If you are interested in drawing Manga and want to learn how to use Manga Studio 5 then Manga Studio 5 Beginner’s Guide by Michael Rhodes is a great starting point.

A new review coming next week for "Manga Studio 5 Beginner's Guide"

Good morning everyone,

On Thursday, May 22 I will publish a review of "Manga Studio 5 Beginner's Guide" by Michael Rhodes. I am looking forward to trying out Manga Studio and I really hope that it improves my art skills.  I own Manga Studio 4EX; but will review the book using the trial version of Manga Studio 5. If there are any differences between the software versions that make a big difference in using the guide, I will point that out in my review.
